Active in Japan since 1953, Total opened its first office in 1957 in Tokyo. Our partnerships with Japanese companies include oil and gas exploration & production, natural gas supply, manufacturing of chemical products and sales of solar panels and high-tech lubricants.

Partnering abroad in Exploration & Production

We are partnering with Japanese companies all over the world (Indonesia, Australia, Qatar, Angola, Italy, Abu Dhabi, Kazakhstan …) to develop and operate Oil and Gas exploration and production licenses and Gas liquefaction plants.

Total and Inpex are notably teaming up to develop the Ichthys gas and condensate field, located off the shores of northwestern Australia, with start of production stated for 2018.

Stable supply of Liquefied Natural Gas

We market Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Japan’s top gas companies and electric utilities, through our interests in LNG plants worldwide. Our affiliate Total Gas & Power Ltd. also supply Japan through direct sales of LNG, sourced from its global asset portfolio.

In addition to Gas, we sell crude oil to Japanese refiners, as well as naphtha (a distillation product), fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate (a type of light oil).

World’s Highest Efficiency Solar Energy

We are actively involved in Photovoltaic Solar energy in Japan. In April 2017, we started producing electricity at the 27 MW Nanao Solar Power plant, located in Ishikawa.

We are also present through our 57% interest in SunPower, the world’s second-largest solar energy company (based on 2016 revenue).

SunPower distributes its high-efficiency solar panels in Japan since 2010 and is very active in the residential market through supply agreements with leading Japanese consumer electronics companies. Sunpower is also expanding its activities in the commercial and industrial market and is studying solar power plants projects, not only as a panel supplier but also as a co-development partner.

SunPower was notably chosen as the main panel supplier (69 MW out of 185 MW) for one of Japan's biggest solar power plants, Eurus Rokkasho Solar Park located in Aomori Prefecture. It is also supplying solar panels for another  project, the 27 MW Eurus Toyokoro Solar Park located in Hokkaido Prefecture. Both are in operation since 2015.
